Stuff overheard at my local DD

This morning while I was getting my coffee at my local DD, I overheard a customer ask an employee behind the half wall of the food prep line "What kind of cheeses to you have?" The employee said rather apathetically with a shrug as he pointed to the woman handling my order 'You have to ask her- I'm new here"

A couple of things gave me pause about this new employee's response. For one, why didn't anyone tell him what kind of cheeses they have before putting him to work the food prep line and two, why did the employee feel like it was the customers responsibility to ask the other more experienced employee what cheeses they have. Wouldn't  it be a better idea for him to ask her, so then he would know the next time someone asked him that question. If the customer asks the other employee then he knows but the new employee still doesn't know what cheeses they have. I think someone should have a talk with this guy. It goes both ways though too. At the same DD I also over heard a customer come up to a very friendly employee and say in a rude curt tone. "A dozen." And that was it. The employee to clarify asked "a dozen donuts?" "Yeah" was all the guy muttered back. He acted like he was giving a dog a command. I could not believe how rude the customer was, but the employee acted like she didn't notice and went about fulfilling is order in a friendly manner.

As a kid I worked at MacDonald's, for a dry cleaners, as a receptionist for a doctors office and as a waitress (my last job before graduating college and getting a real job). So I have been on both sides of these types of situations. To me it comes down to common courtesy, pride in your work and respect for others. I could go on with horror stories of rude customers or patients, but I could tell equally bad stories about being a customer who received really bad service. Service that was sometimes so bad that I even told the manager and the mangers acted like they could care less as well! I don't know what the answer is exactly but I do know that if one of my kids had a job in the service field and gave the answer that the new DD employee gave I would say" " GO ASK HER YOURSELF!". That is your job- not the customers!

more stuff in 2014!

Inspired by MPMK and tinkerlab, I have come up with my list of eight resolutions for 2014. I was going for 10 but decided that this list of eight was good enough and if I actually did all of them it would be great. So my eight great resolutions are…

1. Move more
2. Have more adventures
3. Eat more healthy foods
4. Read more
5. Record more
6. Be more creative
7. Be in the moment more
8. Use more of what I already have

By starting up this blog for like the third or fourth time I’m already working on #5! Here’s to 2014!
